Advocate Shailesh Joshi leads campaign to get the national recognition awarded to renowned pro-independence revolutionary

The campaign to award Vinayak Damodar Savarkar (also known as Veer Savarkar) has intensified. The man behind the term ‘Hindutva’ and a prominent freedom fighter, Veer Savarkar is known for his philosophy to use revolutionary means to allow India to gain complete independence.

While he is known for the extensive work done as a pro-independence activist, lawyer, politician, poet, writer and playwright, national recognition seems to elude him. This matter was raised by well-known advocate and social activist Mr. Shailesh Joshi when he was speaking at a press conference in Akola on the eve of the late freedom fighter’s birth anniversary on May 26th.

He also led a huge rally on May 28th in Akola to kickstart a nation-wide campaign to raise awareness about the issue. The rally was attended by Deputy Mayor Vaishali Shelke, among other dignitaries.

“We are all together in demanding Bharat Ratna for Savarkar. We now need to act to make this a reality”, said Mr Joshi at the event. He has also started an online petition on Change.org to get signatures and convince the government about the common man’s demand to have the highest civilian honor awarded to the freedom movement revolutionary.

As per Mr. Joshi, the freedom struggle saw a lot of revolutionaries emerge who fought with grit and determination against the British rule. While many were recognized for their efforts, there has been no real efforts to get Veer Savarkar the glory he deserves. Mr. Joshi feels that this award will help the patriot to get wider recognition about his literary and revolutionary efforts. He also questions the government’s efforts to not award the civilian award to Veer Savarkar.
